MPI for SCO Unix and SVR4/UnixWare

MPI (Menu Port Interface) is the program for configuring intelligent Digi Boards under SCO Unix and SVR4/UnixWare. This document assumes that you have already installed the card in the system and configured the BIOS correctly for that card. For help on how to do this read the Install Tips section.

MPI consists of several seperate programs, plus all of the drivers for intelligent cards supported in the OS. There are seperate versions of MPI for SCO Unix and for SVR4/SCO UnixWare. Make sure you have the right driver for your system. Install MPI using custom or pkgadd.

  • The parts of the MPI package are
  • MPI, the Menu Port Interface itself, the driver configuration program
  • Monitor, (DPA) the Digi Port Authority, which shows the current status of a board or its ports
  • ditty, the Digi version of stty
any of these programs can be run directly from the command line

To configure a board under MPI, type MPI and then choose config-->install new product-->choose the appropriate product family.

  • Note: Some of the products have similar names -- for instance, the Xe and X/em are in different product families. Be careful to choose the correct product and product family.

Choose the number of cards of this family to install, then indicate the type for each card (use the F2 key to get a pick list). Make sure to choose the right card type and the right slot type (ISA, EISA, MC, PCI).

For ISA, EISA, or MC cards, choose the I/O and Memory Addresses you used in Installation.

  • Several other options appear below the card type:
  • TTY ID Select: Auto or Manual
Choose Auto to let MPI choose the port names, choose Manual to allow manual selection of port names from the allowed list
  • Installation Method: Basic or Custom (C/X and EPC/X)
Choose Basic for an installation where both ports on a card will be connected to local concentrators within 1000 feet of the server, choose Custom when the card will be attached to Concentrators through a CSU/DSU or modem, or where at least one concentrator is more that 1000 feet away.
  • Number of Ports Modules: ## (X/em)
Choose the number of ports modules which are connected to this card (1-4).
For C/X Remote:

If your concentrator is connected through a CSU/DSU or modem, you will need to configure the wire type correctly.

  • The two options for remote wire type are RS232/Modem and RS422/Modem, use the setting appropriate to the CSU/DSU or modem you have.
    • If your device has a V.35 port, you can use that with the RS422 setting.
  • Cabling diagrams for the cables necessary are available from tech support.
The second setting you need to configure is the line speed (actually timeout timing) use the speed that is closest to the DTE line speed of your device.

For further help in configuring C/X Remotes, consult the Troubleshooting Guide.

Testing Your Installation
Run DPA and check the card status:
If the card shows state OK, and the #Ports is correct, (and C/X concentators, if any, show state AC), then everything is configured correctly, and you should be ready to enable your ports.

If you need to remove MPI, and custom/pkgrm fails, check Removing MPI Manually.
