Low power operation for telephone modem interface board (PKG-T)


Can the telephone-radio modem board (PKG-T) be used in lower power modes?


Yes, both the radio and phone modems can operate in lower power modes.

The XStream radio modem has a cyclic sleep function that allows it to wake up over the RF interface. The cyclic sleeping interval is adjustable. Longer wakeup latencies result in for lower average current draw. Use the ATSM command to configure sleeping intervals between 3 and 8 for 0.5 second to 16 second intervals. The modem will draw the Idle mode current for 100ms each cycle and the sleeping mode current for the period chosen by the SM command. The phone modem also has a sleep mode available. Use the ATS24 register to specify the inactivity timeout in seconds. (eg. ATS24=5 will configure the modem to sleep after 5 seconds, ATS24 will query the value, ATS24=0 is the default (no sleep)). When the phone modem is asleep, it will wake up with either phone line or serial activity so it works well to go to sleep quickly, because the modem can wake back up quickly without losing any characters.
